In recent years there has been a massive increase in the amount of people having cosmetic surgery as they realise that it is not just something for the rich and famous. Many are choosing to travel abroad so that they can access high quality procedures, and make significant savings. In Malta, popular treatments such as tummy tucks, rhinoplasty and face lifts typically cost between 30% and 50% less than in the UK, other parts of Europe and the US.
Choosing to have treatment abroad raises concerns about quality and standards, but as a member of the European Union and rated fifth in the world for its overall health system by the World Health Organisation, Malta can offer international patients first class plastic and cosmetic surgery in superb facilities.
Cosmetic surgeons in Malta are highly trained. After five years studying for a degree in medicine graduates follow four years of general surgical training then a further six years of training to become a plastic surgeon. Professional regulatory bodies include The Maltese Medical Council, and since Malta joined the EU a new committee has been set up to award specialist recognition, this is called the Specialist Accreditation Committee (SAC). Specialist registration is required to practice as a specialist in the field of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. The SAC accredits specialists on the recommendation of the Association of Surgeons of Malta, who help promote high standards of surgical practice in Malta and Gozo.
Many cosmetic surgeons train in the UK, US or other European countries, and will have international memberships such as The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), The European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS), The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and/or The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).
Before committing to treatment check a surgeon’s credentials at the Medical Council of Malta and the Association of Surgeons of Malta. Always ask to see patient testimonials and before/after pictures before making a decision.
