Going to Malta for dental treatment

In recent years as the cost of private dentistry soars, many patients are choosing to have their private dentistry work done abroad where treatments like implants, fillings, veneers or tooth whitening typically costs between 30% and 50% less than in the UK, other parts of Europe and the US.

Choosing to have dentistry work performed abroad raises concerns about quality and standards, but as a member of the European Union and rated fifth in the world for its overall health system by the World Health Organisation.

Malta can offer international patients first class cosmetic dentistry in state-of-the-art facilities.

Maltese dentistry is of very high quality and costs a fraction of the price of other nearby countries because it has a smaller population and a less pressured way of life.  What's more, patient waiting lists are low so the service is high.

A range of companies offers dental tourism packages including accommodation (also including room for companions) and treatment so dental patients can enjoy an all inclusive five star dental experience and return home with a beautiful smile.

In Malta there is one dental school, regulated by the Medical Board, but many dentists do their training in nearby European cities, the UK, or the US.  In Malta, dental training involves a five year programme and following graduation it is common for graduates to join a two year vocational training programme before entering private practice.  Specialties are available with orthodontics and facial surgery.

Malta's dental healthcare is the overall responsibility of the Ministry of Health and all dentists must belong to the Medical Council of Malta.  The Medical Council has a register of all dentists who are qualified to practice in Malta with a comprehensive code of ethics for both the medical and dental professions.  The Dental Association of Malta liaises with the dental university and helps with training and furthering dental skills.

Before committing to treatment check a surgeon’s credentials at the Medical Council of Malta and the Association of Surgeons of Malta.  Always ask to see patient testimonials and before/after pictures before making a decision.
