The emergency number in Malta is 112,. Mater Dei is the main general hospital and is located in Msida. Gozo also has a general hospital and there are medical clinics in towns and villages all over the islands.
Most hotels have a doctor on call and there are health clinics and centres in most towns and villages. Chemists will also have information about where you can go for emergency treatment. If you suffer with a particular medical condition or allergic reaction to penicillin or other medicine, make sure you tell the ambulance/doctor.
Many countries have reciprocal health agreements with Malta, for example, visitors from the UK and Australia are entitled to free emergency medical treatment at a state-run hospital under reciprocal health agreements, provided their visit is less than 30 days.
If you are from an EEA country and need to call out a doctor in an emergency, make it clear that you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and that you want to be treated under the EU arrangements, or that you have International health insurance. In an emergency EU visitors can get free treatment in a public ward at a public hospital with their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Without an EHIC you will be charged as a private patient (which can be claimed back if you have a health insurance policy). Private doctors and hospitals will not accept the EHIC so if you are having private healthcare you must settle your own bills (or have an insurance policy to cover it).
Acute emergency dental care is only offered free of charge in hospital outpatient or health centres and generally speaking, dental care will be undertaken in private dental clinics, accredited by Malta's Public Health Authorities.
Emergency elective medical care is provided to patients with a valid E112 form and proof of EU nationality, but the patient will need to join a waiting list if necessary and without the E112 form, patients will have to pay for the treatment.
Prescriptions can be obtained from Pharmacies. The opening times are generally between 8.30am till 1pm and 3.30pm till 7pm Monday to Saturday and between 4pm and 7pm on a Sunday. There are charges for prescription medicines, but people on low-incomes and those suffering from specified chronic diseases are exempt from payment if they show the relevant exemption paperwork/card.
Most countries have embassy or consulate offices in Valletta and the contact details for the embassy offices can be located on the internet or a telephone directory.
