Checking out the hospital or clinic

With top medical professionals and an excellent reputation in healthcare Malta is undoubtedly a top choice for medical tourism. Medical standards are high - in 2000 the World Health Report (WHO) ranked Malta in fifth place in the world for its healthcare systems and health achievements.

When choosing a hospital for treatment abroad it is important to find out all you can about its reputation (ask to see their clinical data), and depending on what procedure you are planning, its expertise with this.

It is also important to check that the hospital or clinic has been accredited by a reputable healthcare group.  Accreditation helps to ensure that a hospital and its medical team maintains good standards, are properly qualified, adhere to good medical ethical standards, have good infection control and good complaints system.

International accreditation adds further backing to a hospital/clinic and there are a number of international accreditation systems already in place in the US, Australia and Canada.  The JCI, or Joint Commission International USA, is an established assessor of hospitals and the Gold Standard accreditation for US and European hospitals.

At the moment neither the public nor the private sector hospitals in Malta have independent international healthcare accreditation but this is likely to change as Saint James Hospital is applying for accreditation with the Trent Accreditation Scheme (TAS), a UK-based assessment programme which works in conjunction with the UK's Healthcare Commission. The scheme assures quality of service to patients and providers and a benchmark of standards with accreditation awards by an independent board which can be applied to other countries, for example, UK and Hong Kong standards have recently been revised.

Ultimately, when checking out a hospital/clinic, you will want to make sure you go to a hospital which is well versed in dealing with international patients with international standards as well as world-class medical infrastructure and equipment.
