Learn about Malta's 7,000 years of history in an audio-visual commentary at the Malta Experience in Valletta then spend an afternoon absorbing some of the city's historical buildings like the 16th century St John's Cathedral built by the Knights of St John which houses some of the Italian artist Caravaggio's paintings.
Sailing into Valletta Harbour is one of the world's top cruise highlights so get on a boat and cruise around Grand Harbour, or connect with a boat from the Strand in Sliema to tour the Maltese archipelago. A wide range of water sports are on offer in Malta from windsurfing to canoeing, and the islands are very appealing for walkers and cyclists alike, with plenty of walking tracks and tours in Malta and Gozo.
Visit Gozo for its quiet, sleepy and unhurried pace. Tourists and locals regularly hike around the island, taking in stunning views from high cliffs and verdant valleys. Kick back in a cafe and snack on a typical Maltese fare - the Pastizzi may be based on the same ingredients (and look very much like a Cheesecake), but it is uniquely Maltese!
An excursion to the ancient walled city of Mdina, Malta's former capital, should be high on your list of sightseeing priorities along with the Palazzo Falson, a medieval palace and museum restored by the Maltese Heritage Foundation exhibiting various objets d'art. Located in the village of Naxxar the Palazzo Parisio is one of Malta's most popular historical attractions and often compared to Versailles in Paris. The palace is lavishly decorated and its gardens combine classical statues and fountains among Mediterranean flowers and plants.
During the summer months coach tours take tourists to traditional Maltese 'Festas' - vibrant outdoor celebrations with fireworks, live music and street decorations in honour of the village patron saints. But if relaxing by the pool or indulging in spa and beauty treatments is more your thing the island's many health and beauty spas or the fitness facilities will be just the ticket.
