Malta International airport (MIA) is located in the south-eastern part of the island, 10kms from the capital city Valletta, between the villages of Luqa and Gudja.  Getting to and from the airport can be done via White Taxi.  Buy your voucher from the taxi counter at arrivals and present it to the driver and if you decide to go to a different destination, the driver will charge by the meter.

Medical tourists or visitors with a disability or specific needs can contact the National Commission for Persons with a Disability, a government-run organisation dedicated to disabled persons, which can arrange assistance upon arrival at Malta airport.  Contact them before your trip and visit their website for more information.

Getting to Malta from the UK/Europe/North Africa

There are daily direct flights to Malta from most major European cities.   From the UK, the flight time is just three hours.  Air Malta connects Europe and North Africa with Malta.

There are a number of airlines flying from the UK to Malta, including Air Malta, GB Airways (British Airways), Ryan Air, Easy Jet, First Choice Airways, Thomson Holidays, Thomas Cook Airlines and Malta Bargains.  Fares to Malta vary - the average return flight from the UK is likely to cost from £150 up to £300 in peak times.  To get the lowest fares, avoid the peak times and book well in advance and avoid July and August if possible.

Train travel is a responsible way of getting to Malta for European visitors.  Visit Rail Europe for timetable, prices and special offers.  For more information about train travel to Malta from Europe visit Seat 61

Italian visitors can travel to Malta from southern Italy (or Sicily) by ferry.  Virtuferries runs a Cataraman journey between Sicilian ports and Valletta during the summer (and winter) months.  Shipping lines also serve Mediterranean ports.  Contact the Grimaldi Group and MaReSi Shipping for more information.

Getting to Malta from Australasia and New Zealand

Medical tourists coming from Australasia will need to travel via major European hubs such as London, Paris or Rome, or via a Middle East city such as Dubai.  Competitive fares are available - the cheapest way is generally to take a round-the-world ticket rather than a simple return fare as there are often special deals on round the world tickets.  Emirates fly regularly between Dubai and Malta with connections to and from Australia, India, Asia and the Middle East.

Getting to Malta from the US and Canada

There are no direct flights from the US to Malta so passengers will need to fly via a major European hub like London or Rome.  Air Canada offers direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Rome, then on to Malta.

Medical travel insurance

Medical travel insurance is travel insurance designed for the specific requirements and risks of medical travellers.

All operations carry some risk, but most travel insurance policies do not cover you for complications arising from treatment abroad.

So for your safety and peace of mind it is highly recommended that you take out medical travel insurance.
