Getting around the Maltese Islands is relatively easy due to their compact size. As well as sightseeing helicopter flights between Malta and Gozo, there is a 20 minute ferry service to Gozo, a sea plane service linking Grand Harbour in Valletta to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo as well as regular boat services between each island and Comino. A water taxi service using traditional Maltese 'dghajsa' (traditional Maltese boats) is also available in Grand Harbour.
The islands' public transport system is efficient and inexpensive and the yellow and orange vintage Leyland, Bedford, Bristol and AEC buses will transport you around the islands in style. Buses serve the major tourist areas and the main bus terminus in Malta is in Valletta, just outside the City Gate. From here you can hop on a bus to almost anywhere on the island, with the longest bus journey taking just fifty minutes.
Driving, cycling and taxis
Car hire is an option if you would like to get off the beaten track, and local garages offer the chauffeur-driven car services. International car hire companies and local companies offer car rental from around €20 a day, with an international - or national - driving license. Road signs are in English, and driving is on the left.
Alternatively, mountain biking has become very popular and is a great way to keep fit and view the remote elements of these stunning islands. Scooters and motorbikes are also available to hire - with an international or national driving licence.
Taxis are run by metres and the prices are government-controlled. Clarify the fare beforehand. White Taxis pick up passengers from most places - except bus-stops.
