About Malta

Malta sea view - TIM

Malta is an archipelago of islands made up of Gozo, Comino, Comminotto and Filfla, and boasts one of the highest sunshine records in Europe.  Located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea between southern Europe and North Africa, it lies approximately 93km south of the Italian island of Sicily.

Over the years Malta has been occupied by many different cultures, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and the British.  The Knights of St John reigned over the island for 270 years building magnificent churches and monuments.  After Malta achieved independence from Britain in 1964 it was awarded the George Cross for its great heroism in World War Two.  The Cross can be seen at the National War Museum in Fort St Elmo.

Malta is a compact space and the smallest member of the EU community with a population of around 400,000.  The longest distance from the south-east to the north-west is under 30km, and the widest point from east to west just 14km.  Gozo, the second largest island in the archipelago, is 14km long and 7km at its widest point.

Tourism is Malta's main industry and with 7,000 years worth of history the islands offer visitors a plethora of historical attractions from temples to palaces, as well as clear blue skies and golden beaches.  Malta's former capital - the ancient Arabic-developed city of Mdina - isone of the island's most popular tourist attractions and Valletta (the capital city) is a World Heritage City filled with Baroque architecture, monuments, museums, churches and quaint narrow streets.

Valletta's Grand Harbour is world-famous and sailing and water enthusiasts will be in heaven cruising around the craggy coastline and many bays, or island hopping to explore quiet villages.  Gozo is rural, quiet and charming and popular for retirement or convalescence, while Comino has the ultimate get-away factor with no cars and a tiny population.  Cominotto, Filfla and St Paul’s are largely uninhabited.
