Medical training and qualifications

Doctor or nurse - TIM - medical training and qualifications

In Malta medical training involves five years of studying medicine then two years of pre-registration house officer jobs followed by a further three to four years of general surgical training.  A further five to six years of training is needed to become a plastic surgeon and doctors are required to work in government service for two years after graduation.  Many of the surgeons have trained in the UK and have the FRCS qualification (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons).

The dental training in Malta comprises a five year programme.  There is just one dental school on the island, regulated by the Medical Board.  Following graduation it is common to join a two year vocational training programme before entering private practice and specialties are available with orthodontics and facial surgery.  The Dental Association of Malta liaises with the dental university to provide courses in ongoing training and progression.

Professional regulatory bodies include The Maltese Medical Council and since Malta's accession to the EU a new committee has been set up to award specialist recognition, this is called the Specialist Accreditation Committee (SAC).  Specialist registration is required to practice as a specialist in the field of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and the SAC accredits specialists on the recommendation of the Association of Surgeons of Malta, who help promote high standards of surgical practice in Malta and professional ethics.

Other associations include The Medical Association of Malta which aims to unite all members of the medical profession and promote ethical professional standards while the Health Division of the Malta Government (the Ministry) is the regulator of health services in Malta.

The Ministry of Health is located at St Joseph High Road, St Venera, the Maltese Medical Council at 181 Melita Street, Valletta CMR02, Malta, and the Medical Association of Malta at Medisle Village, St Andrews, Malta. You can verify a surgeon’s credentials at the Maltese Medical Council, and the Association of Surgeons of Malta.

Cosmetic Surgeons may also be members of international organisations such as The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), The European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) or The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
